A career in the fashion industry can be exciting and allow individuals to express themselves in the eyes of the world. One of the best things about the industry is that there is a range of ways in which one can follow a career; there is no set path that says you a certain qualification or specific level of experience. Despite it being one of the more open industries it can still be difficult to break into it.

We looked at how best to follow a dream career in the inspirational world of fashion.

Know What You Want

Perhaps the hardest decision to make is deciding which area of the industry you wish to pursue. Many will initially dream of being a designer, but there are equally rewarding jobs in the fields of buying, merchandising, and retail, to name but three.

Fashion holds so many similarities across various sectors of the industry; there will be many opportunities to try out different things to see what is truly best for you. Even if your ultimate ambition is to be a designer, learning about the industry first as a merchandiser or a stylist will be great for learning your trade.

Start to Learn

As soon as you decide that fashion is the world for you, it is time to learn as much as you can about the industry. Whether it is the history of clothes and style, or how modern trends become popular, or how top brands merchandise their products to look amazing, any resources you can use to help build your knowledge of the industry will be of huge benefit.

Should you decide that design is your passion, then look at which degrees and other educational courses will help you to pursue this. Entry for any fashion related education will be competitive, so you need to do whatever you can to give yourself an edge.

On the Job

The best way to learn about the fashion industry is to work within it. Some make the mistake of not going for certain jobs because it isn’t what they want to do ultimately, but any exposure to style will help in the end. Even if said job is a weekend position in the local shopping centre, it will help you to begin building some knowledge of what the industry is about.

Be Proactive

While you can make your way in fashion whatever your background, having a proactive attitude is necessary. Ensure that you maximise all opportunities to learn and work within the industry from the earliest possible time, so that you have the best chance of following your dream career.
