Most people know that the summer can be tough on your hair. Exposure to UV rays can cause your natural hair colour to lighten or your coloured hair to fade. Contact with pool chemicals such as chlorine can strip natural oils from your hair, leaving it dry and frizzy whilst again affecting it’s colour. Sea water, loaded with salt can mean more washing and drying of your hair, both of which can have negative implications on it. With summer just around the corner, now is the time to prepare your hair for the summer to ensure that it stays in the best possible condition, whatever your holiday plans.

A Cut or Trim
The first thing to do to prepare your hair for the summer is to get it cut. You can choose whether to invest in a cut and re-style ready for a new look for the new season or whether to simply get a trim, banishing those split ends and any grown out hair dye. If you do choose to get a new style, talk to your hairdresser before hand to make sure that it is something that will see you through the summer, especially if you are planning on lots of water based activity, in a pool or the sea.

Improve Condition
The second thing to do in order to prepare your hair as much as possible for the coming summer is to improve it’s condition. It’s a fact that hair in good condition is less likely to be damaged. In order to do this, use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to help strengthen and protect your hair, whilst leaving it soft and silky.

Increase Strength
The additional washing and drying of your hair during the summer months can cause it to break or leave you with split ends. There are a range of products on the market which have been specially designed to help improve the overall strength of your hair.

Protect It
Finally, you need to try and protect your hair from not only the elements but from the damage you might do on a daily basis drying and styling it. Try to limit the number of times you wash your hair depending on your hair type. This should help to ensure that hair retains the natural oils needed to keep your hair as healthy as possible. Secondly, use the correct protecting products for how you style your hair, especially if using heated styling tools such as curling tongs or straighteners.

Keep these top tips in mind and you’ll be on the right road for ensuring beautiful looking hair throughout the summer and beyond.
